Grain free salmon rostis 1

Grain Free Salmon and Cauli Rostis

Feeling super inspired to create something new, I decided to experiment with this salmon and cauliflower combo, and what a mix of flavours it was! Cauliflower (as I’m sure you know already) is incredibly versatile and works particularly well as a flour or grain alternative. The almond and coconut flour and egg help to bind all the ingredients properly and also allow for some crispiness. This is a fantastic low carb, high protein recipe that will leave you feeling satisfied for hours. It’s also quick and easy, especially if you buy your cauliflower pre-riced.

spicy asian rainbow trout 1

Asian Spiced Rainbow Trout with Microgreens

No matter what the occasion, there is always a way to make even the most indulgent of celebrations a healthy one. Rich in potassium and Phosphorous, trout makes for a fantastic an less expensive salmon-like dish, and is especially rich in Omega 3's - meaning you should enjoy it regularly! Store bought teriyaki sauces are usually laden with MSG and added sugars, so this recipe includes my homemade Teriyaki sauce which contains no sugar, but rather xylitol instead. This is a regular dish in my home - its tasty, nutrient dense, low in carbs and flavourful! I hope you love it as much as I do.

Low Carb Teriyaki Salmon Fish Cakes 1

Low Carb Teriyaki Salmon Fish Cakes

I am going through a major salmon phase at the moment. Absolutely love to mix it up with some fun and exciting omega 3 enriched recipes, featuring salmon of course, and a a little Asian flare. This recipe is a fantastic alternative to traditional fishcakes that usually contain potatoes which for those of you who aren't so into carbs, is not ideal. If you want to save a little on the salmon (as i know it is really expensive), you can replace the salmon with trout, hake or any other fish of your choice. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!

Cauli carrot muffins 1

Low Carb Carrot and Cauliflower Muffins with Basil Pesto Cream

There are often times when my craziest health combos become my most favourite meals. And this recipe in particular has to be one of my top 5 favourites. I literally had cauliflower, carrots and eggs in my fridge (you know how it goes when you haven’t had time to grocery shop), and so I decided to combine these ingredients into a quiche of sorts… and then these muffins happened instead. The natural sweetness of the carrots make these muffins particularly delicious – I may even try making a dessert version of this recipe at a later stage. But for now lets keep things savoury and get you in on the recipe…

Ostrich Lettuce Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries and Basil Pesto

Ostrich Lettuce Cup Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries and Basil Pesto

In honour of celebrating Heritage Day, these ostrich burger lettuce cups are the perfect healthy choice to enjoy this special day while keeping your carbs in check. Even though I am big on vegan recipes, I know there are many of you that enjoy animal protein too, so I decided to start including a few more meat recipes to the mix. One thing I do have to say is that it is so important to choose good quality animal protein. Unfortunately, most commercially available meat and chicken is pumped with harmful hormones which are not only extremely cruel for the animal, but are equally harmful to humans. Where possible try as best you can to opt for organic grass fed meats and chicken to ensure that the quality of the protein is top notch and free from any nasty chemicals and hormones. In this recipe I used ostrich as my meat of choice. Ostrich is not mass produced therefore it is still a “untouched” protein source which is farmed ethically and is free from chemicals and hormones. Ostrich is also an exceptionally lean meat and is very high in iron, and therefore my preferred source of animal protein.

Winter Bobotjie - The Low Carb Way

Winter Bobotjie - The Low Carb Way

Being South African, one of my favourite local dishes is hands down a comforting hearty Winter Bobotjie. I absolutely adore the Cape Malayan influence of anti-inflammatory spices that make this dish so warming and flavourful. Traditional Bobotjie can be very high in calories and unhealthy fats, but with a few simple ingredient swaps, this dish is transformed into a healthy, low carb, high in protein and healthy fats meal, that fits perfectly within a healthy lifestyle plan. If you are vegetarian, simply swap out the ostrich mince for lentils or a frozen mixed vegetable medley. If you are vegan, replace eggs with 2 tbsp. tapioca flour.

Winter Carrot, Fennel, and Orange Soup

Winter Carrot, Fennel, and Orange Soup

Winter has certainly sprung upon us, which calls for some delicious, warming soups. I absolutely love batch cooking soups. Its so easy, you can make plenty, freeze, and then defrost portions as needed. This is a fantastic way to keep healthy during the cold months, while saving time and money. Soup can get boring, and I felt desperately in need of a fresh take on the same old same old. So I tried this interesting combination of Vitamin C rich Oranges, carrots and fennel. This soup is bright and fresh, with a little bit of heat (courtesy of the spicy paprika). The zesty orange juice tempers the sweetness of the carrots, and makes for a flavour that’s tasty and surprisingly fresh. Instead of parmesan you can add some crumbled tofu, and if you feel like something a little creamier, simply add ½ cup coconut milk.

Creamy Low Carb Zucchini Noodles with Spicy Shrimp

Creamy Low Carb Zucchini Noodles with Spicy Shrimp

Nothing beats a good hearty pasta, especially as we approach the colder months. But of course we all know that unfortunately refined carbs, and a slim waistline do not go hand in hand. I am all for still enjoying your favourite foods, so by no means am I suggesting we give up noodles for good. Rather we are just going to switch up a few things to make this dish low in carbs and super good for you. And this recipe is dairy free too. I use avocados to create a delicious creamy sauce, instead of cream. You can even add a dash of coconut milk for a little bit of extra flavour and creaminess. This dish is a great source of healthy fats and protein to keep you feeling satisfied for hours after. Yum and healthy..as it should be!

Eastern Spiced Chickpea and Vegetable Stew

Eastern Spiced Chickpea and Vegetable Stew

I always love incorporating eastern spices into my recipes, not only for taste and flavour, but for the health benefits too. I especially love cumin because it breathes life into just about any stew or curry. Cumin is a fantastic digestive aid, it improves immunity, relieves insomnia, and prevents diseases due to its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. So I am sure you have guessed now that this recipe definitely features cumin. As for chickpeas, these are high in protein, so for those of you who are vegan or vegetarian, this is a fabulous plant-based protein to meet your protein needs. Chickpeas are also high in fibre to keep your tummy healthy and regular. For the meat-eaters, I recommend adding an animal protein of your choice to finish off this delicious dish. I find that this stew is really satisfying as is, but if you feel the need for a little extra bulk, I recommend serving this chickpea stew with some steamed quinoa.

As I always say, balance and moderation is key, so enjoying a hearty pasta every now and again is totally fine (i encourage it). But if you do feel a craving coming on, then this is the perfect appetite pleaser. I especially love this dish because it requires minimal cooking which preserves the nutrients of the vegetables included in the dish.
